trouble with car seat..?

I have a 2003 pontiac aztek and we just purchased a Safety 1st car seat/stroller combo, but we can’t get the car seat to sit in the car right. The car seat and base sit so that the baby would be practically vertical. Has anyone else had problems with finding a car seat to fit the weird angels of the Pontiac aztek seats, and if so what car seat did you find that finally fit? Thanks.
Is the base adjustable? If not, you may have to prop up one of the end, I was told by the fire dept. I bought a cosco juvenile system and have the same problem. I eventually got a graco snugride and fits much much better. good luck!
